Students streaming into the school gym were pumped for the Pep Rally. Member of the modified teams, wearing John Jay jerseys, sat together in the front; the floor and bleachers were filled with sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Principal Jeff Swiatowicz channeled the energy in the room. “When I say howl, I want you to give me a wolf howl!”

“That sounded more like a pack of coyotes; we’ll keep trying this one,” he teased.

Principal Swiatowicz also showed students the Silent Wolf hand motion and reminded the quiet crowed of one of the school’s goals: At John Jay Middle School, we create an environment and sense of community where every member feels like they belong.

"A Pep Rally traditionally honors primarily sports teams - but that is not what we’re all about here," said Principal Swiatowicz. "We want to recognize ALL members of our community who are contributing to our community." He read a list of nearly 30 clubs and activities at the school. "If you hear the name of a club or activity you have attended this year or in a previous year, please stand."

Coaches also introduced the six modified teams and invited everyone to their next games; students responded with cheers and wolf howls.

Principal Swiatowicz acknowledged that trying out for anything, including the school play or a sports team, can make anyone nervous.

“Don’t let that stop you from trying,” he said. “Put the effort in and you will do better next time. If you don’t want to try out, come and be a fan. Read the club board and join a club. Try new things.”
