Team Tenacity Welcome Letter - 6th
Team Tenacity Welcome Letter
Tenacity: exhibiting determination; persistence
Dear Team Tenacity Student and Parents,
We hope you are enjoying your summer vacation! A new school year is right around the corner. We understand that your transition to John Jay Middle School might evoke a wide variety of emotions, particularly given the challenging end to the 2020 school year. We hope you join us as we prepare for the upcoming school year with a renewed sense of excitement! On Team Tenacity, Mrs. Loeb teaches math and science, and Mrs. Milne teaches English Language Arts (ELA) and social studies.
Now that you are in sixth grade, you will have many opportunities to grow as an independent learner and enjoy developing new perspectives. Our goals for you are that you will nurture your curiosity by asking great questions, and that you will learn to think critically about the world around you. Furthermore, we will help you improve your organizational and time management strategies to help you navigate life at JJMS. These life-long skills are as important as any curriculum you will learn.
You may have purchased school supplies through the PTO or collected them on your own. On the first day of school only bring the following supplies: your iPad, ear buds, one folder with a small supply of loose-leaf, a pencil case with the following supplies: 2 pencils, 2 pens, a glue stick and a set of post-it notes. Leave all other supplies at home and we will review our expectations for setting up and organizing materials with you in school.
By now, you should have received your own iPad to use during this school year. We ask that if you do not already own one, you purchase a fine point stylus to use with your iPad. There are several inexpensive options on Amazon that you might want to consider: Pony capacitive pen or Meko 2-in-1 Precision Series. A more expensive option, but worth the investment is the Logitech Crayon Digital Pencil. Please know that you will be using this for multiple years, so an investment in a better one may be worth it. In addition, you will need headphones with a microphone to use with your iPad. Please bring your iPad, stylus, and headphones with microphone to school with you on the first day fully charged. You should not bring your charger to school. Remember to keep your iPad in your Ziplock bag when transporting it in your backpack. We are looking forward to seeing how tenacious you can be as a part of the JJMS community as we celebrate your successes in sixth grade. Enjoy the rest of your vacation!

Welcome Back to School
Hello! We are getting ready to return to school after a long and different summer--we know you are as well. We would love for all of our incoming students (6, 7, 8) to have a sketchbook for class. This should be roughly 9 x 12”, and blank paper. With basic art supplies, the more you spend, the better the quality.
- 9 x 12” Sketchbook- blank drawing paper, 50+ pages
Should we return in Distance Learning, we will require the following extra supplies:
- 12 color set colored pencils
- 1 set watercolors
- 1 black sharpie
These supplies, if purchased, can also be a great addition to a home art supply area.
Thank you so much!
We are excited for the new school year to start and to meet your children.
